Name and Etymology:
The origin of "Funagata" is unknown.
The town's economy originally was based on its location at an intersection of a road to the Dewa Mountains with the Mogami River. It was a waystation for Japan's lignite mines and transport to the coast.
While Funagata was a fortified settlement in the eighth century, it was officially named a town in 1889.
