Name and Etymology:
Nuku was formerly known as Nuku Station. Sandaun Province is named for the Tok Pisin word derived from English "sundown."

Economy:
The economy of the district is largely based on subsistence farming.

History:
Nuku district was included in German New Guinea until World War I when it passed to Australian administration until independence in 1975. The major language of Nuku proper is Meher, a Sepik language, while the district has a high diversity of Torricelli languages.
