Name and Etymology:
The name comes from Taruca, an Aymara word for the Andean deer (Hippocamelus antisensis) and "cachi" or flat yard. The tarucas would come to the cachi to drink.

Economy:
Tarucachi is now known for its apple production such that its slogan is now "Tarucachi tierra de las manzanas."

History:
The fertile valley in which Tarucachi sits was likely inhabited by the Aymara prior to Spanish settlement, but the current town was founded on November 12, 1874.
