District Area: 113.27 km2
Leader: Jesús Melanio García Calizaya (Acción Popular)
Name and Etymology:
The name comes from Taruca, an Aymara word for the Andean deer (Hippocamelus antisensis) and "cachi" or flat yard. The tarucas would come to the cachi to drink.
Tarucachi is now known for its apple production such that its slogan is now "Tarucachi tierra de las manzanas."
The fertile valley in which Tarucachi sits was likely inhabited by the Aymara prior to Spanish settlement, but the current town was founded on November 12, 1874.
