The etymology of Tonj is unclear.

Economy:
The economy of Tonj is largely based on traditional agriculture and pastorialism.

History:
Tonj was formerly part of Warrap State which, along with the rest of South Sudan, gained independence from Sudan in 2011. The Dinka people make up the majority of Tonj North's inhabitants.
